About Gemma
I am an experienced Registered Midwife and independent expert witness specialising in complex maternity care, with particular expertise in CTG interpretation, intrapartum care, fetal surveillance and clinical escalation.
I have completed more than 75 expert witness reports across Claimant and Defendant instructions, including cases involving hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE), stillbirth, neonatal injury and death, maternal deterioration and complex intrapartum care.
My clinical and maternity safety background gives me experience beyond individual episodes of care. I previously worked as a Maternity Investigator with the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB), now the Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigations programme (MNSI), investigating serious maternity incidents and complex care pathways.
Alongside my expert witness practice, I am a Senior Clinical Quality and Safety Manager (Midwifery) within the North East and North Cumbria LMNS, with a particular focus on maternity safety, quality improvement and learning from adverse outcomes.
I also undertake expert work in NMC Fitness to Practise proceedings, providing independent opinion against relevant professional standards and the NMC Code.
I hold an MSc in Health Studies and am a Full Member of the Expert Witness Institute. I am currently undertaking doctoral research exploring parents' experiences of maternity investigations following the death of their baby at or around the time of birth.
Across all of my work, my approach is the same: independent, objective and evidence-based opinion, clearly communicated and focused on assisting the Court.
